The Contribution of Imam Jafar Sadiq a.s to Science

The Contribution of Imam Jafar Sadiq a.s to Science

Imam Jafar e Sadiq (a.s) is known for His (a.s) contributions in the various fields of study. It was for his beliefs and his presence that this world had witnessed an influx of scientific knowledge. This paved the way for research studies and brought an enthusiasm for this field. It was deemed necessary for the Muslims to immerse themselves with the knowledge of science and to benefit from the teachings of Al-Sadiq (a.s).

He (a.s) has sown the seed of knowledge for every generation to benefit from what he delivered and taught his aspiring students. Like every Messenger (a.s), every Imam (a.s) had delivered the knowledge for mankind to progress and transform their lives for the better. From the scientific contributions of Imam Al-Sadiq (a.s), we learned that nothing exists without science. What we understand is the explained version of science. What we don’t understand and refer to it as a miracle is the explained version of science. However, he also made it clear that Allah, the creator of everything, is beyond every science.

During the early 8th century AD, a time of his arrival was the time when no one had imagined of such a diversified arena of knowledge. That was the time when He (a.s) started pumping knowledge into the minds of individuals. He (a.s) gave concepts and established logical reasoning and explanation for undiscovered subjects. It was due to his teachings and knowledge, that mankind is able to reach such unimaginable heights and has explored areas which would have not been possible without His (a.s) teachings.

Imam Jafar Al – Sadiq (a.s) has taught many students belonging to diversified spheres of life. One of those was Jabir Ibne Hayyan. Having learned the art of science, he became a known personality in the field of chemistry, wrote many journals many of which are still of significant value. This proved that Imam Al-Sadiq (a.s) had such distinguished students in his class. This arena of knowledge of Imam Al-Sadiq (a.s) dates back to that of Imam Ali (a.s). Once Imam Ali (a.s) said to Kumayl Ibne Ziyad “I have vast knowledge but cannot find a talented individual”. Similar was the case with Imam Al-Sadiq (a.s). This is also evident from the fact that over four thousand persons reported traditions from Imam Al-Sadiq (a.s). If the reporters were over four thousand then what were the number of traditions one can simply understand.

Another accolade that has been attached with His (a.s) name was the establishment of a learning centre where he taught between 4000 to 12000 students the science of chemistry, physics, medicine, astronomy, philosophy, geography, mathematics, biology, history, literature, jurisprudence and more. His students, who learned from his teachings, were not the ordinary ones and travelled from far off places to benefit from the teachings of Imam Al-Sadiq (a.s). These students then later went on to spread the knowledge learned from him (a.s) into their circle and this way His (a.s) teachings are still of valuable importance in the form of references, narrations, books by his students, discoveries and more.

Imam Al-Sadiq (a.s) went a step ahead & showed practical demonstrations of the scientific reasoning for the keen learners. He stated that sick patients or those suffering from a special disease are more prone to emitting radiations that are more likely to make others sick as well. Another masterpiece from He (a.s) was when he stated that oxygen produces acidity. This phenomenon, later on, was discovered by Priestly in (1733-1804). (Source).

Imam Jafar Al-Sadiq (a.s) has established this scientific arena to transfer his knowledge to the keen learners. It is due to His (a.s) significant contribution that the world has reached to such a higher level of knowledge and understanding in the field of science.
