Imam Hussain as is third Imam of Islam, born in 2nd HJ in the house of Imam Ali as and Lady Fatima sa in Medina. He was grandson of Holy Prophet Muhammad PBUH. At the time of birth of Imam Hussain as, Holy Prophet was foretold about martyrdom of his grandson. Holy Prophet PBUH loved him so much. Multiple number of times Holy Prophet PBUH expressed his love through actions and speeches.
Holy Prophet PBUH said, “Hussain as is from me, I am from Hussain as.”
Imam Hussain as became imam after the martyrdom of his brother Imam Hassan as in 50 HJ till his own martyrdom in 61 HJ. Soon after the death of ruler of Damascus, his son Yazid came in power. He demanded the allegiance from Imam Hussain as. Although Imam Hussain as rejected the offer after saying “Person like me, will never bow to person like you.”
Imam Hussain as was forced to leave Medina of 28th of Rajab, 60 HJ. He went to Makkah first then he set off his journey for Karbala. The forces of Yazid was sent to Karbala where the stopped Imam Hussain as. Imam Hussain as entered Karbala on 2nd of Muharram 61 HJ. Ladies of his household and children were along with him. Only 72 companions were present. On 10th of Muharram battle was fought between the forces of Imam Hussain as and Yazid. Imam Hussain as was martyred along with his all companions.
Today Karbala is considered as the most important holy sites for all. Millions of people visit Karbala for the ziyarat of Imam Hussain as and his companions every year. Karbala became important place soon after the martyrdom of Hussain as. A large number of Hadiths and sayings are being narrated by Imams who came later.
Allah has kept the huge reward for the people coming for the ziarat of Imam Hussain as. It is being narrated by Imam Jaffer Sadiq as that,
“One day while Imam Hussain as was sitting in the laps of Holy Prophet PBUH, He raised his head and said, “O father what will be the reward of people who perform your ziyarat after you leave this world?”
Holy Prophet PBUH replied,
“O my Son, Those who will perform my ziyarat after I leave this world will be rewarded with paradise, those who will perform ziyarat of your father, Imam Ali as will be rewarded with paradise. Those who will perform ziyarat of your brother, Imam Hassan as will rewarded with paradise, and those who will perform your ziyarat after martyrdom will be rewarded with paradise.”
Not only humans but it is also mentioned that each creation including Jinn’s and angles also perform the ziyarat of Imam Hussain as respectively. Doing grief on the martyrdom of Imam Hussain as is so important that animals and birds also express their sorrow and grief upon Imam Hussain as.
Imam Muhammad Baqir as narrates,
“Mankind, jinn, birds, and animals all shed tears and mourned at the martyrdom of Hussain ibn Ali as.”
Few hadiths for enlightening the importance of ziyarat of Imam Hussain as are mentioned below.
Abdullah al Tahan narrates:
I heard Aba Abdullah Imam Jafar Sadiq (as) say;
“On the Day of Judgment, everyone will desire to be amongst those who had performed the Ziarat of Hussain (as) because they will see the manner in which the zuwar of Hussain (as) will be recognized and treated by Allah.”
Imam Jafar Sadiq (as) narrates:
“When a man leaves his family to visit the grave of Hussain (as), all of his sins will be forgiven when he takes the first step.
And he will become more and more purified with every step. Once he arrives at the grave of Hussain (as), Allah will speak to him and say, “O My slave! Ask me and I will grant it. Call Me for I will answer you. Request anything and I will fulfill it. Ask Me for any of your needs so that I may grant it.”
Imam (as) added, “And he has earned this recompense by Allah for that which he has spent.”
Abdullah al Tahan narrates:

There are hundreds of hadiths which are narrated in favor of Zaireen of Imam Hussain as and increases the importance of ziyarat of Imam Hussain as. It is duty of every mankind to perform ziyarat of Imam Hussain as once in a year or at least once in a lifetime.
