The Martyrdom of Imam Hassan Askari a.s

Imam Hassan Askari

Introduction:

Imam Hassan Askari (a.s) is the eleventh guiding light out of the twelve infallible imams. He was born on the 8th of Rabi Ul Thani in the year 232 AH in Medina. His father was Imam Ali bin Muhammad (a.s). Like his father, he also continued the guidance of the people with the same ambition and dedication.

Knowledge of Islamic Jurisprudence:

He (a.s) possessed all the religious, scientific, and intellectual capabilities like his Father (a.s). He considered his duty to publish religious sciences and multiple pieces of literature on Islamic aspects. He also wrote a book by the name “Tafseer e Imam Hasan Al-Askari (a.s)” in which he talked about various events that occurred and it’s depiction for the Muslim ummah. He stood up against the corrupt and raised his voice to establish justice in society. He spared no means of creating a just system to ensure equal rights for all. It was for his struggle that people from all walks of life regarded him and started turning towards this eleventh infallible guiding light for establishing morals and ethics.

The Abbasid Rule:

The Abbasid ruler, when heard about the masses glorifying Imam Hasan Askari (a.s), got displeased with the act. These Abbasid rulers were aware of the fact that while in the presence of Imam Hasan Askari (a.s), their rule position is in severe danger because of the corrupt system they always preferred. Therefore, they put an economic blockade against Him (a.s) and put him under house arrest in Samarra. They went further by announcing severe penalties for those who try to contact Imam (a.s) or by any means try to ease him in the prison.

The incapability of these rulers is evident from the fact that submit themselves to the worldly gains and appropriated the wealth of Allah to themselves. They even took people of Almighty Allah as their slaves. Another reason for such atrocities was that Imam Hasan Askari (a.s) was also the father of Imam Mehdi (a.s), for whom there are various quotes of the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H). He (P.B.U.H) stated that Imam Mehdi (a.s) will emerge as a savior of Muslim ummah and will establish social justice and morals as the pillars of his rule. He (a.s) will not only eliminate the oppression but also the oppressors under His (a.s) rule. These quotes made the Abbasid’s rulers worry about their thrones and consider Him (a.s) as the destroyer of their long-held glory. Therefore, to confine such possibilities, they conspired and sent female spy agents to get first-hand information about such noble birth.

But the planning of Almighty Allah is above all, and he made it unknown to everyone except His (a.s) father i.e. Imam Hasan Askari (a.s) just as he made the birth of Prophet Moses (a.s) unknown to the Pharaoh.

Narrations:

Imam Hasan (Askari (a.s) was from the noblest and infallible family on the face of this earth. However, while under house arrest there was not a majority of narrations from Imam Hasan Askari (a.s) simply because of the severe penalties imposed on meeting him in person for religious advice. However, quotes of Imam Hasan Askari (a.s) and narrations that reached his lovers depict his true grip over the knowledge of Fiqh.

Martyred:

The Abbasid’s rulers, unable to confront Imam Hassan Askari (a.s), poisoned him at the age of 28 years. The shahadat of Imam Hasan Askari (a.s) is commemorated on the 8th of Rabi ul Awal. The Roza of Imam Hasan Askari (a.s) is in Samara which is one of the sacred places.
